Purpose

Welcome to the Learning Center!  Here you’ll find information on the Challenges document that set the stage for this web site, along with links to Organizational and Educational Resources to further your knowledge about walking, hiking, biking and wheeling in Central New York and beyond.

The CNY Pathways Work Group, creators of the website, is a subcommittee of “Forging Our Community’s United Strength” (F.O.C.U.S.) Greater Syracuse, whose Vision is to work on Making Central New York a healthy place where all human modes of travel are safe, accessible, and easy; and to support healthy neighborhoods.  To do this, the group developed a Citizen’s Strategic Action Plan for Connecting Healthy Communities with specific goals of developing a connected network of routes for cycling, hiking, walking & wheeling throughout CNY.

The group Developed recommendations, prioritized strategies and noted potential champions to address a series of challenges relative to the vision.  These challenges include:

1. Provide safety and security for walkers, hikers and wheelchair users.
2. Provide safety and security for cyclists.
3. Teach everyone how to share the road safely.
4. Encourage walkable communities and accessible urban trails.

One recommendation that addressed each of the challenges was to create a public website with maps & safety information, dedicated to the group’s mission.  The FOCUS Work Group asked the Syracuse Metropolitan Transportation Council (SMTC) to host the web site.
